Phillip Carrero.<\/p>\n<p><b>Raising the Flag at Iwo Jima<\/b>\u00a0is painted from a historic\u00a0photograph taken\u00a0on February 23, 1945, by\u00a0Joe Rosenthal. It depicts five\u00a0United States Marines\u00a0and a\u00a0United States Navy\u00a0corpsman\u00a0raising an\u00a0American flag\u00a0atop\u00a0Mount Suribachi<span style=\"font-size: 11px;\">\u00a0<\/span>during the\u00a0Battle of Iwo Jima\u00a0in World War II.<\/p>\n<p>It won the Pulitzer Prize for Photography the same year it was published (the only photograph at the time ever to have done so), and even appeared on a commemorative US dollar in 1945. What few people know is that this inspiring moment was actually a second version of the original event.<\/p>\n<p>On 23 February 1945, 2nd Battalion Commander Chandler Johnson was ordered to send a platoon to take the Japanese mountain of Suribachi. First Lieutenant Harold G Schrier was chosen to lead the platoon, and as they embarked, Johnson handed Schrier a small US \u001f flag which had been taken from the USS Missoula, and said, \u2018If you get to the top, put it up.\u2019 The Battle of Iwo Jima had seen some of the \u001e fiercest \u001e fighting of the Paci\u001efic Campaign, and this was the \u001e final throe.<\/p>\n<p>(exerpted from\u00a0May 12, 2011\u00a0By\u00a0George Clode)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>132cm x 112cm.
