Budgie topped the world rankings in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Burgess was originally a gymnast, winning a silver medal at the\u00a0<a title=\"Australian National Gymnastics Championships (page does not exist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Australian_National_Gymnastics_Championships&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Australian National Gymnastics Championships<\/a>\u00a0as a thirteen-year-old. Having grown too tall to continue with gymnastics, testing at the\u00a0<a title=\"Western Australian Institute of Sport\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Australian_Institute_of_Sport\">Western Australian Institute of Sport<\/a>\u00a0suggested that Burgess was suited to pole vault. By 1996, Burgess had won the gold medal at the 1996 Sydney\u00a0<a title=\"IAAF World Junior Championships in Athletics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IAAF_World_Junior_Championships_in_Athletics\">World Junior Championships<\/a>, clearing a then-personal best of 5.35 metres. Later that year Burgess set the under 18 Australian record of 5.51 metres. In 1998, Burgess finished second at the\u00a0<a title=\"1998 Commonwealth Games\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1998_Commonwealth_Games\">1998 Commonwealth Games<\/a>, third at the World Junior Championships and seventh at the\u00a0<a title=\"IAAF World Cup in Athletics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IAAF_World_Cup_in_Athletics\">World Cup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Burgess finished second at the\u00a0<a title=\"East Asian Games\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Asian_Games\">East Asian Games<\/a>\u00a0in 2001, clearing 5.50 metres. In 2002, Burgess finished fifth at the\u00a0<a title=\"IAAF World Cup in Athletics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IAAF_World_Cup_in_Athletics\">World Cup<\/a>, clearing 5.20 metres.<\/p>\n<p>At his second\u00a0<a title=\"2004 Summer Olympics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2004_Summer_Olympics\">Olympics<\/a>, in 2004, Burgess finished eleventh at 5.55 metres, although he had cleared 5.70 metres in the qualifying rounds.<\/p>\n<p>It was, however, in 2005 that Burgess&#8217;s form improved dramatically, clearing 5.91 metres, 5.95 metres and then 6.00 metres in domestic competition. These were, at the time, the three highest vaults on Australian soil.<\/p>\n<p>Burgess ended the 2006 European season as the number two ranked pole vaulter (behind training partner\u00a0<a title=\"Steven Hooker\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steven_Hooker\">Steven Hooker<\/a>), having won the\u00a0<a title=\"World Athletics Final\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Athletics_Final\">World Athletics Final<\/a>\u00a0on 10 September 2006.
