Three times Commonwealth Champion and one of the iconic bastions of Sydney and the Randwick Botany Harriers Club.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Saville, from an athletically-inclined family, competed in swimming and&nbsp;<a title=\"Surf lifesaving\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surf_lifesaving\">surf lifesaving<\/a>&nbsp;events as well as walking as a junior athlete. She has competed at four Olympics, with a midfield result in&nbsp;<a title=\"1996 Summer Olympics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1996_Summer_Olympics\">1996<\/a>. In the 20&nbsp;km&nbsp;<a title=\"Racewalking\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Racewalking\">racewalking<\/a>&nbsp;event at the&nbsp;<a title=\"2000 Summer Olympics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2000_Summer_Olympics\">2000 Summer Olympics<\/a>&nbsp;in her home city of Sydney, when heading into the stadium&#8217;s tunnel for the final stretch, Saville was disqualified for an&nbsp;<a title=\"Racewalking\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Racewalking#Rules\">illegal gait<\/a>&nbsp;(<i>lifting<\/i>: a very common occurrence in race walking &#8211; the previous leader of the event had already been disqualified). Saville collapsed in tears; afterwards, when asked what she needed, she replied &#8220;A gun to shoot myself&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Saville#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Saville recovered her composure soon after and was publicly philosophical about her loss.<\/p>\n<p>On her bronze medal in Athens, Saville stated &#8220;Nothing will make up for a gold medal in your home town, but you know this is where the Olympics began and any medal here, you know, I&#8217;m absolutely ecstatic with it&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Saville#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Saville has also won three gold medals at the&nbsp;<a title=\"Commonwealth Games\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commonwealth_Games\">Commonwealth Games<\/a>, in the 10 kilometre walk in 1998, in the 20 kilometre walk in 2002 and 2006. She has won the Australian women&#8217;s race walking championship five times. She was the Australian&nbsp;<a title=\"Standard-bearer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Standard-bearer\">flagbearer<\/a>&nbsp;at the&nbsp;<a title=\"2006 Commonwealth Games\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2006_Commonwealth_Games\">2006 Commonwealth Games<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a title=\"Melbourne\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Melbourne\">Melbourne<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She is coached by her husband,&nbsp;<a title=\"Matt White (cyclist)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matt_White_(cyclist)\">Matt White<\/a>, a professional cyclist. She splits her time between Sydney and&nbsp;<a title=\"Oliva\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oliva\">Oliva<\/a>,&nbsp;<a title=\"Spain\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spain\">Spain<\/a>. Her sister,&nbsp;<a title=\"Natalie Saville\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natalie_Saville\">Natalie Saville<\/a>, is also a race walker and finished second to her at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n<p>Saville announced her retirement from competitive racewalking in February 2009,<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Saville#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;with her future plans including continued work in community health and fitness promotion, and a role on the&nbsp;<a title=\"IAAF\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IAAF\">IAAF<\/a>&nbsp;race walking technical committee.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\"><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jane_Saville#cite_note-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Saville has completed a&nbsp;<a title=\"Bachelor's degree\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bachelor%27s_degree#BA.2C_AB.2C_BS.2C_BSc.2C_SB.2C_ScB\">Bachelor&#8217;s degree<\/a>&nbsp;in&nbsp;<a title=\"Social science\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_science\">social sciences<\/a>&nbsp;from the&nbsp;<a title=\"University of New South Wales\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_New_South_Wales\">University of New South Wales<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;76cm x 61cm (30&#8243; x 24&#8243;) Oil on Canvas Board, Phillip Carrero Oceania\/Commonwealth\/national record &#8211; 20km walk.
