{"id":681,"date":"2007-09-03T10:56:54","date_gmt":"2007-09-03T00:56:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.michelangelofineart.com.au\/wpart\/?p=681"},"modified":"2023-02-15T21:41:45","modified_gmt":"2023-02-15T10:41:45","slug":"trevi-neptune-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/michelangelofineart.com.au\/wpart\/trevi-neptune-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Trevi, Neptune Rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/michelangelofineart.com.au\/wpart\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Neptune-rules_med.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.michelangelofineart.com.au\/wpart\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Neptune-rules_med-236x350.jpg\" alt=\"Neptune rules_med\" width=\"236\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a>36 x 24 (91.5cm x 61.0cm) Oil on canvas board.<\/p>\n<p>Centerpiece of a triptic set on the Trevi Fountain at Rome.<\/p>\n<p>Phil Carrero<\/p>\n<p>In 1629\u00a0<a title=\"Pope Urban VIII\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_Urban_VIII\">Pope Urban VIII<\/a>, finding the earlier fountain insufficiently dramatic, asked\u00a0<a title=\"Gian Lorenzo Bernini\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gian_Lorenzo_Bernini\">Gian Lorenzo Bernini<\/a>\u00a0to sketch possible renovations, but the project was abandoned when the pope died.\u00a0The planning for a new fountain on the site began again 100 years later. This time under the Roman architect Nicola Salvi, whose work was inspired by the sketches left by Bernini. The fountain took 30 years to finish and it stood completed in year 1762.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Trevi Fountain is dominated by a several large statues. The very center of the fountain is dominated by a man standing in a large shell chariot. This statue depicts the Roman god of the water and the seas, Neptune &#8211; also known as Poseidon in Greek mythology. The chariot is pulled by two sea horses. One of them is calm and submissive while the other one is impatient and restless. The creature\u2019s different temper is said to symbolize the fluctuating moods of the sea.<\/p>\n<p>Each one of the horses is guided by a triton \u2013 a mermaid like creature who formed the escort of marine divinities in the Greek mythology.\u00a0 The creatures do not only add symbolic meaning to the fountain with the contrast in their mood and poses, but they also provide a symmetrical balance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>36 x 24 (91.5cm x 61.0cm) Oil on canvas board.
