Bronwyn Eagles 219

Posted on 11/08/200221/01/2023

Bronwyn Eagles 21967Cm X 97Cm. Oil On Primed Board.
Commonwealth Record Holder, Hammer Throw. Nationals ’01. Phillip Carrero.

This painting started very dark, I wanted to create depth. With every subsequent layer of oils it went lighter and lighter.
I’m happy with the result since it does give a 3D impression on a 2D medium. It must have been right since it was stolen together with the rest of the Sporting Heroes I had on display at Hollylea on the 21st February 2003.
Bronwyn Eagles made her senior international debut in hammer throw at the 2001 East Asian Games, winning gold. Named the Athletics Australia Female Athlete of the Year in both 2001 and 2002, Eagles at one time held every Australian hammer throw record from under-16 to open. Making her Olympic debut at the 2004 Athens Games

The Commonwealth and Australian record-holder, with a best throw of 71.12m in 2001, she announced her retirement in 2006

In 2008, Eagles resumed competition for the fun of it and went on to win her fifth national title at the Australian Championships.
